Paul Nash - Proprietor
I started trading in Portobello Road, London in 1967 with many now legendary names in the world of art and antiques. Always looking for something different I followed an evolution of artistic interest over 40 years. Oriental porcelain, works of art, Indian art, brass, ormolu and metalware, textiles, clocks, sculpture, pictures, furniture, fossils and minerals represent a number of discipline in which I traded.
With improvements in mining technology natural fossils and minerals, once the preserve of museums, was for the first time available to the public very economically. It seemed the right time to present these very ancient natural phenomena in a modern artistic way. Early exhibitions were a complete sell out.
Harrods recognised the potential of this art form and now run a world famous gallery on the 3rd floor drawn from our stock.
If art is a combination of power and beauty then fossils and minerals successfully achieve this at a fraction of the price of contemporary art or antique paintings and sculpture. At last decorative evolutionary elements of this planet can be a part of our every day lives. A dragonfly revealing every detail of its wings, a mammoth tusk frozen in time, a crystal full of colour and energy all at prices which are as hard to believe as the items themselves.
They fill a home or work place with serenity and help promote an understanding of our developing planet. Created throughout time this natural art presented as decoration in the form of pictures and sculpture is a constant reminder of the world around us, what has been and what will be. |
